Pen and colored pencils on paper, 2005.
As a (rather
weird eccentric) teenager interested in several things Japanese, I was impressed with the tradition of the hanami and with the delicate beauty of the cherry blossoms. I’d love to visit Japan someday, preferably at the right time of the year to enjoy the hanami!
The girl in this drawing is Sakura (Japanese for “cherry blossom”, and also a pretty name for girls), a character in the romance that my dear friend Carla was writing during our teenage years. She used to send me the chapters as she finished writing them; I was part reviewer, part
fanatic enthusiastic reader, occasionally illustrator. That was our way of having fun!
